Summer Meals Fill Hungry Little Bellies

By Anne Mead

Often, children don’t have enough high-quality and healthy foods to eat during the summer. Families’ budgets increase by $316 a month to feed a family of four whose children normally eat lunch at school. Summer Meals Danbury, in conjunction with Danbury Public Schools and its community partners, offer breakfast and lunch throughout many of its schools. However, only one in four children take advantage of the program. Danbury Public Schools are hoping that ALL children will take advantage of the meals.

“Feeding our children during the summer and doing activities that stop the summer learning slide are really important to maintaining skills” said a Danbury Public Schools employee.

Reading and art activities are planned around the noontime meals. The Family Learning Center is offering a free reading program for all children and their parents on Tuesday at 12:15-1:30 and for children only on Thursday 12:15 to 1:30. Pre-registration is required at 203-797-4734.

Summer Meals are offered at many of the Danbury Public Schools. See the chart below for dates and times. The Danbury Library offers meals from 1-2 pm. The following schools serve breakfasts and lunches: (All programs are closed July 4.)
