Simple Ways Parents Can Ease Children Back Into School

By Jyoti Kelkar

Excitement and dread are common feelings for both children and parents when back-to-school season arrives. No matter how much they look forward to seeing friends and wearing a new school wardrobe, children are often afraid of the changes a new school year brings. Fortunately, parents can do a lot to ease the transition from summer to school.

Establish aroutine. While summer is in full swing, use the month of August to get back into a routine closely aligned with the fall schedule. Help children establish a specific homework time for when school is in session and then, begin getting them used to doing something quiet and studious during that time, like writing in a journal or reading a book. If bedtime has slipped later and later during the summer, start putting your children to bed earlier each night until you reach the desired bedtime.

Choose a location where you can keep an eye on them, but still minimize distractions like TV, phones and electronics. To help build their excitement about going back to school, let children help in prepping their study area. Stock it with comfortable chairs, a sturdy and roomy work surface and essential supplies like pencils, pens, erasers and extra paper.

Fitting Kumon into your children’s daily routine is a small investment of time that reaps long-lasting benefits.

From new teachers to new classmates, new schools to new schedules, the anticipation of the new school year can cloud the excitement of the awaiting opportunities. Help your children adjust by letting them know they aren’t going at it alone. Use the weeks leading up to the first day of school to help your children set goals. Setting goals early will put them on the right path to achieving them. Establish weekly meetings to review their schedules, assignments and activities for the week ahead. Putting these practices in place now will help ease any back-to-school jitters your children may have.
