It’s that time of year again in Downtown Danbury, the Holiday Season! There are few things that I enjoy more than Main Street lit up during this festive time of year. Last year was the first time in over 30-plus years that we had holiday lights spanning the width of Main Street. It took a lot of coordination, with teamwork from the city, CityCenter, private contractors and downtown property owners. In addition to the lights spanning Main Street, the city purchased new garland to be wrapped around the decorative light poles throughout Main Street, and in doing so, we were able to wrap Elmwood Park with additional garland and lights.
Each year, in keeping up with CityCenter tradition, we hold our “Light the Lights” festivities, at which Mayor Boughton counts down and flips the switch to light up downtown. Back by popular demand this year will be the Fire Truck Parade, in which dozens of volunteer fire departments will drive up and down Main Street to compete for the best holiday decorated truck. It’s quite the sight to see and we’re excited to grow this parade from last year.
New this year will be CityCenter Danbury’s Holiday Decorating Contest. We are encouraging both merchants throughout Downtown Danbury and property owners to dress up their windows, front doors and facades with holiday decorations. Prizes will be awarded to the top three locations based on the judges’ votes. So be sure to check out Main Street for this exciting new addition to the holiday season.
Another new event to take place during the month of December is our first screening of Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. This classic holiday film will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit and you’ll fall in love all over again with George Bailey. The movie will be screened at the historic Palace Theater on Main Street, beginning at 3:00pm on Saturday, December 10. There are no tickets for purchase; it is first come first served!
From everyone at CityCenter Danbury, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season!
