Experience Ichiro

By Alicia & Renato Ghio

In an unassuming spot on Newtown Road near the Berkshire Shopping Center sits Ichiro Japanese restaurant. Opened in 2005, Ichiro offers a combination of Asian fusion, sushi and hibachi entrees.

When it comes to atmosphere, there are two sides to Ichiro. For a boisterous environment with a large group, enjoy the hibachi area. For a quieter, intimate atmosphere, head to the separate dining room and sushi bar.

Ichiro has a full bar, so you can enjoy everything from fancy cocktails like a Blood Orange Cosmo to beer and wine to hot and cold sake options. The extensive food menu at Ichiro offers something for every member of the family, including children.

We started with a sushi sample platter, with a classic assortment of tuna and salmon sushi and sashimi pieces, as well as a Mango Dragon roll, featuring shrimp tempura with cream cheese, fresh mango and avocado wrapped in soybean paper and topped with avocado and a mango and eel sauce. It was fresh and refreshing. If you dine in on Mondays and Tuesdays, sushi rolls are 50 percent off.

Be ready to laugh a lot if you’re having hibachi. Hibachi is a meal with a show, as the Hibachi chef cooks your food before your eyes. From the onion volcano to flipping zucchini pieces into our mouths, along with extra squirts of sake, our hibachi chef was very entertaining and friendly. We tried both the shrimp and the steak hibachi dinners. It was very filling; plan to take home leftovers. All hibachi dinners come with clear onion broth soup, a green salad with Ichiro ginger dressing, hibachi noodles, rice and vegetables, plus ginger and mustard sauces.

Lining the walls of the entryway and hosting area, you’ll see hundreds of photos of smiling hibachi guests. If you celebrate your birthday at Ichiro, you too can have your photo added to the wall. In fact, if it’s your birthday, Ichiro offers a free entrée (after $22) and free dessert. They also have a private party room you can book for larger celebrations.

Ichiro’s prices are on par with what you would expect for fresh, good quality sushi and hibachi. It can get busy on weekends, so reservations are strongly recommended.

Ichiro is located at 69 Newtown Road in Danbury. They are open Monday through Thursday for lunch from 11am to 3pm and for dinner from 4:30 to 10pm; Friday and Saturday from 11am to 3 pm for lunch, 4:30 to 11pm for dinner; and, on Sundays from 11:30am to 10pm.
